Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang TrekMustang is an ancient Himalayan Kingdom with its capital Lo-Manthang which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of the Kaligandaki River. It lies north of the two 8,000 meter peaks Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The arid landscape with the snow-capped mountains and barren hills reaches deep inside the vast Tibetan plateau. Cold winds sweep through narrow canyons and over the plains where erosion has left its marks in bizarre rock formations. This area is considered as one of the most interesting and picturesque places in Nepal. The whole area has an isolated and mystical feel to it, enchanting and inspiring visitors to this region.

The main hydrographic feature of Mustang is the Kali Gandaki River. The river runs southward towards Nepal plains, the Terai, bisecting Mustang. Routes paralleling the river once served as a major trade route between Tibet and India, especially for stone salt mined in Tibet. Most tourists travel by foot over largely the same trade route used in the 15th century. The trek to Lo- Manthang is through high altitude desert country climbing in and out of the huge sided valley of the Kali Gandaki River. In places, the gorge which the Kali Gandaki River runs through is the deepest in the world. Only a handful of Westerners had visited this area before it was opened to tourism in 1992 and they brought back reports of a culturally highly developed, thriving medieval society and a landscape almost beyond description.

This area has long been inhabited by Tibetan Buddhists and nowhere else in Nepal can such rich, untouched culture be found. Trekkers are not common here which is why this trek provides such a rare and up close look at a society that has remained unaffected by change for centuries. Upper Mustang is perhaps the only place to see the Tibetan culture in its completely undisturbed state. The houses and monasteries in here have a medieval look and unique local architecture. Mostly they are built with stone and sun baked mud bricks. This region is full of some of Nepal’s oldest Buddhist Monasteries and ancient and isolated villages with quaint white washed houses. If Shangri-la had a physical manifestation in the real world then it would most definitely mirror Mustang.
